Portraits of Friends on Mt. Tamalpais

Cupcakes are old news.  The future has beamed in CAKE POPS!  Brides and husbands have been among the first to join in the hub-bub; these treats have exploded at hip weddings across the nation.  I don't think we'll see the end of this fad any time soon.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to hear the most snooty Michelin-star chef exclaim, "Put a stick on it!"   So, Ariel and I went with the flow, and allowed ourselves to get swept up in this trendy new wave of playful confections, doling them out on a hike last weekend for my birthday.  They present a super convenient solution to the dilemma of how to make cake last for multiple parties (Attempts to repair a half demolished cake with icing for another party have proven disastrous.  Yes, I've seen it happen!).  In fact, their utility trumps their convenience: you can wield them, like we did here, in a sweet-sabered Muskateer salute!
While I enjoyed my birthday on Thursday in Point Reyes with Ariel and her parents, my father-in-law held me hostage with his husky, broken-record impression of Marilyn Monroe's performance of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President."  (Truth be told, a part of me did appreciate his enthusiastic and surreal baritone delivery.)  On Saturday, Ariel and I escaped with friends to the serene summit of Mt. Tamalpais for a peripatetic stroll through a wide palette of pale greens, as seen through the rice paper fog that provided a soothing filter for the day.  We took our old, combat-ready Rebel camera for some nature photographs and quasi-candid portraits of our friends.

    "Hi-Ho!  Hi-Ho..."

Bowerbird Photography Featured on Offbeat Mama, Bay Area Family Portrait

Bowerbird Photography got featured by Offbeat Mama giving the nod to us as the "uber-talented Bowerbird Photography."  Yikes, we're blushing.  Partial screenshot above.  Okay, go to Offbeat Mama and enjoy the photos - this mom and son duo are super cute!!!  This San Francisco portrait session took place in the colorful Clarion Alley in the Mission District.

Family Photo Session at Clarion Alley

Clarion Alley in the Mission is such a great photography spot in San Francisco. But the pictures won't be so special if it wasn't for this beautiful mom and son who joined us there this weekend. You could tell that they love each other so much and these photos captured that family bond, plus a lot of awesome color!

Tiny Home Holga Shots

The film just came back from processing! Samuel took some fun Holga shots on an early Sunday morning at Glen Canyon, with local SF duo Tiny Home. Ariel also did a band interview with them which you can watch here.

Holgas are toy cameras with very few controls, and each camera has a very distinctive character, with quirks of its own. You never know what you're going to get!

This was shot with ISO 100 film on a very bright day.

Handmade Photography Album

We donated our services to a fundraiser at the USF Public Interest Law Foundation and wanted to provide them with an album of our work for the auction next week.

Although we have great options and know some awesome vendors for wedding and family portrait albums, we had a special vision for how we wanted this album to look - and we just love to get crafty together. So we decided to be creative.  We cut, drilled, tied, and bound our own album, using a classic Japanese method. We were even able to incorporate silk fabric that we used at our own wedding, adding a little magic and good luck to the mix.  We were pretty happy with the result! What do you think?

Bowerbird Photography is dedicated to giving back to the community, so let us know if you know an organization that needs help.

Family Photos at Baker Beach

What a great smile!!

Here are some fun family photos taken at Baker Beach last weekend. Despite the fog, it was actually pretty warm and we were even able to play around in the water a bit!
